Cristian Silva

Since 1989, Cristián Silva's work has attempted to explore the territory where the existential and the political intersect, or as he himself has pointed out, “the intimate and emotional side of the class struggle.”

Recoded elements that belong to all levels of culture, periods of history and ideological points of view coexist in Silva's work; many times autobiographical, many other times part of the universal collective memory, almost always highly specific. And almost always also open to generating multiple readings and interpretations.

Although he has lived in Mexico for the last ten years, Silva has maintained intimate contact with Chilean events, the situation and sensitivity. This is how in 2004 he exhibited a work in the H-10 gallery in Valparaíso; This work constitutes the starting point for this proposal.

The central element of that micro-installation was a model that reproduced to scale the air extraction ducts located on the side of the old UNCTAD III building.

The work consists of a set of units, very diverse from each other, which in their entirety make up something that we could call "a memorial with the appearance of a cabinet of curiosities." Small, medium or large format, these pieces range through diverse materialities and presentations (drawings, paintings, photographs, objects, sculptures and videos), while alluding to the most dissimilar contexts and events.

It is currently located in Building B, floor -1, in front of the Popular Art Room.
