The objectives of the Studies area are to generate reflections and discussions on the connection of GAM with the public and communities, the territories and the social and political contingency of the country, contributing to the construction of knowledge for the strategic decision-making of the institution, as well as to the debates on art, culture and society.

The team develops, from a mainly sociological perspective, research on audiences, communities, artistic education and mediation programs and other topics related to cultural management, through the application of quantitative, qualitative and participatory methodologies. Likewise, it provides methodological support to the different areas, generating spaces for reflection and dissemination of knowledge on cultural issues, along with generating training opportunities such as internships and professional practices.

In addition, it collects and systematizes information on GAM's activities and audiences, monitoring compliance with the agreement with the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, and other management indicators.

Audience characterization surveys

The Annual GAM Audience Characterization Survey (ECP) has been prepared by the GAM Studies area since 2011.

The study has provided reliable, periodic and comparable statistical measurements to understand the characteristics, behaviors and perceptions of its various audiences, and their transformations over the years.

The preparation and analysis of own statistics is essential for the planning, management and monitoring of GAM strategies. In this way, progress can be made with forceful input towards the institutional mission of the cultural center. In addition, thanks to this, comparisons can be made with cultural statistics at the regional and national level.

Annual activity and public reports

The activity and public reports systematize the total activities carried out in GAM annually and the number of public attending each of them. They serve as an archive of everything that has historically happened in GAM.

Studies and evaluations

Various studies have been developed to evaluate both artistic programming as well as mediation and artistic education programs and projects, with the purpose of knowing the perception and impact of the activities for their participants. Citizen consultations have also been carried out to find out the opinion of their audiences on the role of culture and GAM in the face of the social mobilizations of 2019 and 2020, as well as a consultation of digital audiences in the context of confinement.

Research internships

Every year the GAM Studies area, as part of its training lines, receives university students of the social sciences to carry out their professional internships, where they develop research projects according to their interests together with the Studies team.

Additionally, during 2020, the first version of the “Public Laboratories” research internship project was carried out, which convened and financed teams of professionals and multidisciplinary students to carry out research on audience management, participation and cultural consumption.
