Victor Castillo
The Chilean artist focused on art and public intervention, according to the spirit of UNCTAD III. With acrylics in hand, Castillo is faithful to his style with constant references to the world of comics and especially to the television cartoons of his childhood.
The originally innocent characters become war toys that, with irony and sarcasm, are put at their service to describe the violence inherent in man, the hypocrisy in politics, racism and the manipulation of information.
“I used images taken from cartoons and old caricatures as a collage, to build a narrative scene. Humor and irony are an important part of my work. It is a huge maw that seems to engulf everything in whose long and extensive tongue different scenes that are connected to each other develop. Young people marching in what looks like a carnival or a protest, a wolf wearing a lamb suit, a mouse that represents the richest, asking for silence amidst all the commotion. All inspired by the changes and social concerns that I see present in current Chile and that are also part of a global social and economic crisis. It is the system that refuses to change in the face of social movements, while politicians dress for the occasion, hiding their true intentions, and the owners of capital refuse to listen. The mural is a tragicomic vision of the contemporary context and an invitation to provide greater freedom of creation for our brilliant young people.”
