Share your feeling

“Share your feelings” was an initiative by the GAM Communications team to honor the victims of the pandemic whose families and loved ones did not have a space for expression. An attempt was made to make room for the pain, the mourning that seemed suspended due to the isolation measures.

The campaign was developed during the months of August to December 2021, and included the creation of a website where the public could share their memories, learnings and desires through words, photos, colors and audios. The space also had other memory initiatives and an invitation to collaborate with a musical accompaniment list.

For the launch, an audiovisual recording was thought of where two dancers dressed in white tour the GAM building. Among their squares, patios, rooms and even on the roof, they dance to represent the different losses that covid-19 has left for millions of people in the world. Its interpretation also delivers a message of hope to celebrate life, to reunite and accompany the transition to a new society through culture.

With the suspension of artistic programming, the quarantines and the thousands of deaths caused by the pandemic in Chile, it was necessary to change communication strategies and give space to everything that was happening. Artists had lost their jobs, the cultural world was at a standstill and the economic problem generated by the above was producing a crisis. The theater tried to provide answers through intimate montages, in zoom format that changed GAM's way of working.

Given this, Communications sought to make room for the pain, the mourning that seemed suspended due to the isolation measures, to avoid turning the page. We sought to generate a space of containment, to create a pause to recognize what had happened to us and to be able to communicate it; returning people to a humane and welcoming society in the face of sadness. Validating the feelings of others and embracing them allows us to build an empathetic culture that can visualize new lives from losses.

“Covid-19 changed the course of our lives. We have all lost something valuable in this health crisis. There are too many people who are no longer here, jobs, hugs and freedom were lost. As GAM we offer a space to celebrate the life we had, the one we have or the one we dream of having.”

— Felipe Mella, executive director of GAM.

The website became a repository of stories, an invitation to vent about what didn't work out, with the plans that couldn't be carried out, with the postponed meetings and paused customs. He also proposed spreading other Covid-19 memory initiatives and also a collaborative playlist on Spotify GAM. In one month of the digital campaign, 52 messages were written, 65.4% of them coming from Santiago, 11 from regions and one international.

“We want to give relevance to the affections of our audiences, recognize them as people, empathize with them, build together a space that contains, excites and gives them hope from a cultural perspective. It is a proposal that seeks to create ties with and between the public”

— Ximena Villanueva, GAM communications director.

Installation in Central Plaza

In November 2021, the campaign presents its in-person version with an intervention in the GAM building so that visitors to the building can leave drawings, thoughts and memories in your own handwriting. Using COVID security and protocol measures, you are invited to participate using a piece of paper to write a tribute to those who have left or share memories, frustrations, learnings, dreams, in a framework of respect. After writing, people can hang the writing on the wall with a wooden clothespin.

The in-person campaign totaled 491 written messages in total, which are broken down as follows: 38 from the commune of Santiago, 141 from other communes, 38 from regions, 28 international, 42 from Chile and 242 Without Info.

Programmatic action: self-care workshop

As a closing action of the campaign, a self-care workshop through art as therapy was proposed together with the GAM Programming area, to encourage the expression of ideas and emotions through creative work in the company of peers. It took place on December 16 and was taught by Amelia Aguirre, a graduate in Visual Arts, and the Audiencias GAM team. At the end of the workshop, participants shared their ideas on the installation wall.
