Programmatic principles
Art is a space where sensitivity, question and difference coexist without imposing themselves. At GAM we embody that vocation of being the house of creativity, a place where art, culture, city and citizenship meet to imagine possible futures.
As an urban laboratory dedicated to the dissemination and circulation of arts and ideas, we are committed to strengthening culture and, from that base, our programming is based on a fundamental conviction: art and culture are essential tools to understand the world, expand public conversation and coexist in diversity.
We recognize that artistic and cultural expressions are often a mirror of social tensions, contemporary conflicts and divergent visions. Far from avoiding these issues, at GAM we believe that, as a massive cultural institution within the Alameda axis, our mission is to provide a safe space for the development of different cultural expressions, always ensuring respect and care for others.
“Our programmatic decisions are evaluated in coherence with our Mistralian vocation based on humanism, inclusion, the dignity of people and the recognition of cultural diversity. Within this framework, since 2010 we have sought to contribute to a relevant, contemporary cultural offering connected to the debates that cross Chilean and global society from an international, multidisciplinary perspective and situated in its historical and territorial context.”
— GAM programming.
GAM's programming is selected by the Programming area in conjunction with a large team of external advisors specialized in disciplines, who, from various perspectives, contribute to enriching the plurality of views and the diversity of the programmatic proposal. Said selection is presented to the Corporation's Board of Directors for approval. This entire process is developed in accordance with criteria aligned with the mission and purpose of the institution, always safeguarding unrestricted respect for artistic freedom and freedom of expression.
The presence of a work, artist or thought responds exclusively to cultural, artistic and curatorial aspects, and does not imply, in any case, institutional adherence to the personal, political or ideological opinions of those who participate. At GAM we offer a platform for diverse voices, precisely because we believe in the value of democratic and pluralistic debate.
As a site of memory recognized by the Ministry of National Assets and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), we assume the commitment to project this space into the future, safeguarding diversity and pluralism to guarantee respect for life, human dignity and democracy. We appeal to that memory to reaffirm our permanent commitment to transparency, diversity and the conviction that a freer, fairer and more inclusive society needs cultural spaces that are brave, open and deeply committed to the people who inhabit them. The defense of GAM's inclusive programming is, ultimately, the defense of culture and democracy as a guarantor of the representation of all the people who are part of the country.
