Violet and instinctive painting

The exhibition seeks to install dialogues, reflections and intersections between a fundamental painting in Violeta's work, the oil painting The Death of the Little Angel—belonging to the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of Chile—and the work of instinctive painters. In the pieces in the exhibition we can see the creation of a common imaginary, on which the synthesis of the particular and the universal is reflected. Its authors paint the peasantry, the flora and fauna, the land and the sea; and in other circumstances they display a civic testimony or give an account of the urban and the modernization of their environment. But there is also in them a desire to express the subjectivity of the dream horizon, or the deep beliefs of the popular strata, which are often their own, because the majority of these painters share a modest origin, turning their desire to materialize the intangible in the pictorial on fabrics, wood, cardboard, cans or any element that they had at their disposal at the time they were creating their works.  

This exhibition is curated by Nury González, visual artist and director of the Tomás Lago Museum of American Popular Art (MAPA) at the University of Chile.
