#ManifiestoGAM is a photographic montage led by Gabriela Mistral, who fantasizes about great cultural figures supporting the feminist fight for equality. The mural is installed on GAM's Alameda façade and seeks to portray how the discourse of citizens who march also dialogues with the programming.
“In Chile the highest art is playing dumb”, “sorry for the inconvenience, but they are murdering us”, “neither saints nor whores, only women”, are just some of the messages that GAM has spread on its Alameda façade since September in a monumental artistic intervention.
The #ManifiestoGAM project celebrates the nine years of the cultural center and seeks to make visible the conversation between citizens and the GAM billboard.
Led by Gabriela Mistral, relevant women from the Chilean artistic and cultural world, raise their voices from the front of the building to appeal to passersby. It is a muralist fantasy where these characters, who have embraced social causes, meet in the middle of Alameda to demonstrate about today's Chile and support the feminist fight for equality and respect.
The intervention is a collage composed of six street art style canvases, 150 meters long, containing iconic photos of citizen movements from different eras. Faces of renowned cultural figures linked to GAM, such as Isidora Aguirre, Ana González and Pedro Lemebel, coexist marching with actresses who have been on its billboard, such as Claudia di Girólamo, Belgium Castro, Patricia Rivadeneira, Catalina Saavedra, the cast of Paisajes para no coloring, Claudia Vicuña and Marcela Said, among others.
Quotes from Mistral herself, such as “my indigenism made me hateful”, they join messages from real marches such as “no one asked me how the rapist was dressed” and also some texts from the GAM plays themselves, such as “one day the whole past will make us ashamed” from the montage Mistral, Gabriela (1945), by Andrés Kalawaski.
“The purpose of this project is to participate in social movements from the visual perspective, just as we do from the contents that we have in GAM's programming," comments Felipe Mella, executive director of GAM, and adds: "We believe it is important to highlight the messages that the artists have expressed in our rooms because they are absolutely connected with what happens in the Alameda." artists and the public,” comments Ximena Villanueva, director of communications and marketing at GAM, and adds, “#ManifiestoGAM is showing that art and social movements have a lot to tell us about how we treat children, women and minorities.”
The mural presents works by emblematic photographers such as Carlos Wagner, Javier Torres and María Eugenia Lorenzini with their record of feminist protests during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. They are joined by Rotmi Enciso, Maglio Pérez, José Parada, Pedro Marinello, Jorge Sánchez, Patricio Mello, Gustavo Milet and Nacho Rojas.

GAM Manifesto was made a month and a half before the social outbreak of October 18, 2019. Until then, 70 marches had been held in Santiago.
