An exhibition from the American Folk Art Museum that explores ceramics as a territory of memory, identity and creation, bringing together historical and contemporary works in dialogue with stories, experiences and new perspectives on folk art.
What stories remain hidden in the matter? What knowledge inhabits the clay before it becomes a work? From these questions arises La veta, an exhibition from the Museum of Popular American Art (MAPA) of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Chile that comes to GAM to propose a new look at Chilean ceramics.
Taking as a starting point the geological concept of vein – the clay layer that crosses hills and valleys and that constitutes the material origin of the pieces – the exhibition explores ceramics as an active field of production of meaning, deeply linked to territory, memory and creation processes.
The exhibition distances itself from traditional forms of exhibition of popular art to activate new readings around gender, the body and the classification systems that have historically organized these artistic expressions. Through oral stories, personal memories and life experiences of its creators, the exhibition incorporates fundamental dimensions of ceramic production that are rarely part of conventional museographic stories.
The tour brings together works by prominent figures in traditional ceramics, such as Sara Gutiérrez and Dolores Jorquera, along with contemporary creators such as Nayadet Núñez, Martín Vásquez and Elisa Oropesa. Their works dialogue from current problems and innovative perspectives, expanding the ways in which contemporary identities and experiences are related to ceramic traditions.
One of the most innovative aspects of La veta is its collaborative curatorial methodology. The exhibitors actively participated in the construction of the stories, the museography and the exhibition modes, also developing unpublished works especially for this exhibition.
The exhibition brings together recently created pieces along with works belonging to the MAPA collection that have never been exhibited before. Through installation resources and new museographic strategies, the exhibition proposes renewed ways of approaching objects and generating dialogue with the public.
La Veta Inauguration
La veta will be inaugurated on Thursday, June 25 at 7 p.m. in the MAPA room. The launch will be preceded by the talk Women and Popular Art which Eli Bartra will give in the C1 conference room of the same cultural center between 5 and 7 p.m.
