The book Chile from within celebrates 25 years with its first edition in Spanish, conferences and a large exhibition with the images that transformed it into an icon of national photography.
It is 1988. Photographer Susan Meiselas arrives in Chile sent by the legendary Magnum Agency to cover the plebiscite. Already in the country, the American contacts local photographers to publish a portrait of Chile under dictatorship, from within. Thus was born Chile from within, a book that was published in 1990 with 75 black and white images by 16 photographers along with texts by Marco Antonio de la Parra and Ariel Dorfman.
The book became a reference for national photography and its images have been exhibited in the United States, Canada, France and Chile. Now 71 of those photographs are on display to celebrate 25 years of their publication.
The exhibition Chile from within covers Chile from 1973 to 1988 through the eyes of Paz Errázuriz, Alejandro and Álvaro Hoppe, Helen Hughes, Jorge Ianiszewski, Héctor López, Kena Lorenzini, Juan Domingo Marinello, Christian Montecino, Marcelo Montecino, Óscar Navarro, Claudio Pérez, Paulo Slachevsky, Luis Weinstein and Óscar Wittke. The exhibition curated by Jorge Gronemeyer also includes a video with words from its authors, objects linked to the original book and a review of the political use of the photographic image in various publications in Chile during times of dictatorship.
