Yann Marussich

Bleu Remix is the sequel to Bleu provisoire (2001), a performance in which Yann Marussich lets a bluish liquid flow through his skin. The soundtrack of that first performance is remixed by local musician DJ Carlomarco, while the artist - sitting inside a transparent cage - invites you on an intimate journey through his body.

Motionless, blue tears begin to slowly roll down her cheeks, mucus and blue saliva emerge from her nose and mouth. With imperceptible movements, an intense gaze and blue sweat, Marussich opens paths between the internal and external world, secret passages from the unconscious directly to consciousness.

Why the blue? This color is related to wisdom, serenity and dreams. Always present among us, but non-existent in our bodies, blue is in the subconscious. It is life, journeys and discoveries. Marussich's intensity and blue ink take the viewer to an experience that reaches the supernatural. Since its premiere in 2007, Bleu Remix has been presented in fifteen countries and has been recognized with the 2008 Ars Electrónica award, Hybrid Art category (Austria).

In Bain Brisé a tub is filled with broken glass. A man's forearm is visible on the surface of the sharp, crystalline magma. The man is held down and cannot leave without getting hurt. Why go out? The public can hardly understand that it is soaked in 600 kilos of matter, while time passes. Is this the paradox of contemplating a man in danger?

Yann Marussich shares this intimate, everyday moment to create the dreamlike atmosphere of a bathroom turned public, instead of trying to reveal the superhuman element of his performance. For two hours, the artist immerses the audience in a visual and sensory apnea, of deep concentration and frozen by the gaze, until their body is freed from the resonance of the crushed glass. This work is the closing of the Glass cycle, a hypnotic experience between the performer and the viewer.

Yann Marussich (1966, France) is a prominent contemporary choreographer, dancer and performer living in Geneva, Switzerland. Since 1989 he has created twenty works that have been presented in multiple countries. Between 1993 and 2000 he directed the Théâtre de l’Usine in Geneva, where he programmed contemporary dance. He founded ADC Studio in 1993 and from the creation Bleu Provisoire (2001), his first totally immobile piece, he delves into introspection and control of stillness while his body is faced with different stimuli, even aggression. This is his poetic space, in an often violent contrast between the suffering of his body and absolute impassibility. Currently he leans towards individual performances and body-art. His works include Autoportrait dans une fourmilière (2003), Morsure (2004), Blessure (2005), Soif (2006), Bleu Remix, Nuit de Verre (2007), Brisures, Ex-Pression (2009), Bain Brisé (2010), Rideau! (2014) and La Chaise (2015), with Filipe Espindola and Sara Panamby.

Workshop with the artist

In addition to presenting the performances of his two works, Marussich will hold a workshop for theater and dance professionals, performing arts students and those interested in performance. For three days, the artist will work on the dramatic and practical construction of the performance, with special emphasis on the limits of the body and on the “solo” as a creation methodology.
