Witness

Since its creation, the GAM building has been the protagonist of the last 40 years of our history, so to reconstruct it there was no better way than to investigate the memory of those who have been part of it. “Only experience and age sometimes provide more acting tools than any actor,” says Pierre Sauré about the piece he directs and in which he worked with elderly amateur performers.

Through a biographical process that related his experiences to the place, Witness: Biographical Reconstruction of a Protagonist Building was created, a work narrated in chorus that tells of the most relevant milestones of these four decades, crossed with scenes and image projections, personal photographs of the actors, historical videos and original music.

“I worked for two months with improvisation techniques so that they could explore their performing abilities and then the research began,” he warns about the laboratory that included the cast's meeting with Irma Cáceres de Almeyda and Moy de Tohá. “It was very interesting to listen to these two women who were in charge in 1972, who started the activities of the Gabriela Mistral Metropolitan Cultural Center at the time, who opened the famous dining rooms after UNCTAD III, and who saw how it closed its doors for the coup d'état,” she emphasizes.

For the director, the staging does not aim at stylistic adoration or scenic innovation, but rather its main invitation is to rescue the historical dignity and documentation of such an emblematic place. "It is a proposal to dialogue and share, from sensitivity, the loss and recovery of the idea of ​​community. We are all witnesses of this story," he concludes.
