Unwanted

When Rwandan choreographer Dorothé Munyaneza was 12 years old, in 1994, one of the most brutal genocides in recent decades took place in her country: in just 100 days, around a million people were murdered. Most of the women who survived were raped and about 5,000 children were born from that tragedy.

She and her family were able to escape to London, but the atrocities she saw made her learn that there are unspeakable realities, that pain surpasses words.

In Unwanted, Dorothé Munyaneza returns to her homeland and turns the tears of those mothers into body movements, in a choreography that, accompanied by voices, sounds, songs and stories, provides a deep vision of the events.

His body navigates through the stories he collected by talking to victims and studying how pain was expressed in their movements. Together with the American punk singer Holland Andrews and the French composer Alain Mahé, Munyaneza brings to the stage the drama of the Rwandan genocide, but also an undeniable truth: the body speaks when the testimony has been silenced.
