Three Marys and a Rose

There are stories that are not only told, but woven, and few pieces are as emblematic in national culture as Three Marys and a Rose. Originally premiered in 1979, in one of the most complex moments of the military dictatorship, this work became a public phenomenon and a symbol of bravery that toured the most important stages in America and Europe. Today, this fundamental classic returns to the theater under the direction of renowned actress Loreto Valenzuela, who was part of the original cast and now leads a new version that seeks to connect that living memory with current audiences.

The work places us in a burlap workshop in a marginal town, where four women fight to support their families in the face of unemployment and the absence of their colleagues. Through the making of these pieces of fabric that denounce oppression and crisis, the protagonists find not only a way to survive, but a space of resistance and sisterhood.

"The idea of ​​re-staging it was born from a deep need to recover the original meaning of the work. In the last stagings I had seen, I felt that the focus had shifted only to the comedy, leaving in the background the social and human context in which this story was created. As a member of the original cast, for me it was essential to contextualize it again, to return its rawness, its tenderness and its truth," says Loreto Valenzuela.

With a masterful mix of drama and genuine, popular humor, the piece manages to portray human dignity in the midst of a tense environment, where laughter and crying intertwine to face adversity.

In this new bet, premiered in 2025 at the Teatro Ictus, Loreto Valenzuela shares the stage with a luxury cast made up of Carolina Paulsen, Luciana Ibáñez and Constanza Mora. Together, they give life to this creation of the Theater Research Workshop (TIT) that, decades later, continues to resonate with overwhelming force. "For me, the play works like an orchestra, each character is a different instrument, with its own rhythm, color and energy. The work has consisted of fine-tuning these differences so that, together, they build a solid and true scenic harmony. The balance between such different personalities and such a powerful story is the heart of the production," adds the director.

Three Marys and a Rose is an invitation to commemorate the crucial role of women in the social and cultural resistance of Chile, offering the viewer an intimate look at the fight for dignity. "The public will see a deeply human, funny, moving, close and true work. It is a production that combines humor, emotion and memory in equal parts, inviting both laughter and reflection," concludes Valenzuela.
