The La Calderona Theater Company premieres in Chile the text by the award-winning Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga, a work that imagines an intense dialogue between Teresa of Ávila and an inquisitor, to reflect on power, words and mysticism.

16th century. Teresa of Ávila is confronted by an inquisitor. He wants her to return to the convent and give up her desire to reform the order. He aims the power of the bureaucracy on this rebellious, sick and persecuted woman. The conversation that takes place between them is The Language in Pieces, a work that the Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga, 2007 National Theater Prize winner, wrote inspired by The Book of Life, the autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila.

"If the tongue told the truth about heaven and hell, it would break into pieces; but on the other side, for us, there is only silence," the inquisitor tells Teresa of Ávila in this work that investigates mysticism, power, the word and gender relations within the Catholic Church.
"Mayorga presents the presence of the inquisitor as a reflection of Teresa, as a mirror, as if this confrontation took place with herself. It is the masculine power that does not tolerate the disobedience of a woman and how this problematizes her own conviction. The pretense, the change of roles, the confusion between one character and another give our presentation a contemporary view of Mayorga's speech. That is why in our montage the roles change, are confused, alternate, play in unison, merge in body and sound to reveal this encounter that is as concrete as it is metaphysical. Present and past dialogue in an accurate counterpoint that allows our historical character to renew his relevance,” explains Mario Costa, director of the montage.
With more than 10 years of experience and a dozen works, the group from the Faculty of Arts of the Catholic University places the work inside a space that could be a chapel, a cell or a confessional. The sounds of the viola da gamba in the hands of Gina Allende and musical direction by Macarena Baeza join with the interpretations of Sara Pantoja and Alexei Vergara in the roles of Saint Teresa and the inquisitor.
