The Recording

"It's a semblance. It's inspired by Marta, but it's not her. I made that clear, right?" Delfina Guzmán is quick to distinguish that the new GAM production selected in the 2013 call, The Recording, is not the biography of Marta Rivas, but a work that shows a left-wing aristocrat remembering with her granddaughter her experiences in the Unidad Popular.

“The image of a grandmother seen through the eyes of her grandson, I don't know if it is real or not, but I did know her a lot,” she continues about the close relationship they had, even being classmates at theater school. "I have known Rafaelito since before he was born. That has made it easier for me to interpret, especially in the language, she used a very strong, very violent language, from Chinese shit up, but not as aggression, but as a way of speaking, nothing more." Regarding the responsibility he assigns to this particular role, he argues that it is neither more nor less than that he would have with Queen Elizabeth or Lady Macbeth, and that he does not dare to venture a possible reaction from the inspiring muse. "She was a mixture of vanity and naivety. She cared that her opinion had weight and strength. A very intelligent, very cultured woman."

Although Rafael Gumucio's debut in drama is crossed by this figure and his particular vision of the recent history of Chile – which the writer already captured before in his praised 2004 novel Los Platos Rotos – the production is not about or focused on his life but rather on the meeting of two women situated from an age, economic and social perspective.

"The character has some things, and not others, but the important thing is the clash of ideas, visions, of history. How two generations, through their experience, see dignity," adds Álvaro Viguera, director of the show who will also try to reveal with the audience how dissimilar or similar their positions can be. "There is nothing that disidentifies this country more than the obsession with identifying. The more you try to distinguish yourself from the rest, the more you look like others," Guzmán adds.

Previous Seasons 

The Recording is a GAM production that had its first season in October 2013. The following year it was presented during June, as part of the Teatro Hoy cycle of Fundación Teatro a Mil.
