148 women have been murdered in Chile for gender reasons from October 2012 to May of this year, according to official figures from Sernam. 148 women murdered in Chile since the company Viajeinmóvil premiered its version of Othello, in which they precisely changed the focus of the tragedy from jealousy to femicide.
The story is the same: Othello, the Moor of Venice, believes that Desdemona is unfaithful and murders her. But this version condenses the length and characters of William Shakespeare's original work and makes its melodrama characteristics explicit through the soap opera format. Puppets of fragmented bodies share the scene with two actors: Jaime Lorca and Nicole Espinoza.
Lorca, formerly La Troppa, adapted and directs the work together with Teresita Iacobelli and Christian Ortega. The montage returns when 400 years of Shakespeare's death are commemorated.
