Mistral, Gabriela (1945) Santiago Off

This is not a biographical work or a poetry recital. He never wanted to be. This is an impossible fiction, “a Mistral work with bullets.” This is how Andrés Kalawski, its author, proposed it from the beginning, and that is how he convinced Aliocha de la Sotta to direct it, because both aspired to the same thing: to explore the facets, contradictions and depths that crack the mold in which Mistral has been presented.

Mistral, Gabriela (1945) takes place at the moment when she finds out that she has won the Nobel Prize, although she imagines it in a strange way: her kidnapper tells her. Because here the writer is locked up for reasons that her captor reveals little by little and that aim to change history.

Solange Lackington plays Mistral and Valeria Leyton plays Alicia, leader of the women's movement that has her kidnapped. “It is a conversation between two women who discuss history and how we make history,” says Aliocha de la Sotta. From their different origins, ages and perspectives, the characters discuss many topics, based on the breadth of topics that crossed Mistral's life and work, as a woman, intellectual and writer. They talk about Latin America, politics, feminism, social movements, violence, art, ecology, faith, love and more. 

“I wanted to find a tone that would rescue all the conflicts in which he participated and their intellectual and political importance,” explains Kalawski. However, this discussion does not have the solemn tone of a monument. And the playwright adds: "In this text Gabriela Mistral contradicts herself, doubts, manipulates, is offended, boasts and is ashamed. In other words, she looks a little more like a person and less like a bill. Hopefully."
