Lear or the origin of our tragedy

Body, movement, sound. Shakespeare did not write for the paper, but for the stage. He had a theater, he was involved in the staging of his plays, legend has it that he acted in some of them. 400 years after his death, the TeatroPAN company created a version of one of his most notable tragedies searching for that theatrical origin, which goes beyond the word.

Lear or the origin of our tragedy moves away from realistic text theater through a version that is installed in the East, in accordance with the aesthetics, techniques and emotionality of its traditional theaters, such as kabuki, khata khali and Peking Opera, among others. "We never before dared to try to be the source. Today we do not avoid it, we worked as if we were a company from the East. It is very literal," explains Jaime Reyes, director of the production played by 10 actors.

The story and most of the characters of King Lear are maintained. An elderly monarch gives power to some of his daughters so he can live out his old age in peace, but the plan does not work and he is abandoned and mistreated. Family conflicts, passion, betrayal and death break out. "An unavoidable theme of the work is old age and its combination with power. There is also a non-literal reading, an open question, about who we give power to," says the director.
