Based on the work of the same name by August Strindberg, it is a tragedy set on a summer night at the end of the 18th century in a Swedish city. It tells the story of Julia, the daughter of a count who decides to spend St. John's Eve at the servants' party, while her father is away.
Miss Giulia dances compulsively to the rhythm of deafening music under the indiscreet and commanding eyes of the peasants, symbolically dressed in wigs with long blonde hair.
The dance hall of the San Juan festival, in which the mercurial aristocrat Giulia has taken part, mingling with her servants, resembles a kind of metal bunker. When the music stops, the young woman is left alone in the company of Jean, her father's lackey, and has sexual relations with him. However, the meeting between Giulia and Jean, or between a nobleman and a poor man and, in turn, between a woman and a man, is inevitable.
The arrogant and cynical social climber quickly shows himself for what he is, and reveals his intentions. On the other hand, the young woman's fragile nature and instability will become more arrogant and finds an explanation in the story she gives to her family, an intimate confession that reveals the causes of her unhappiness. In the end, the woman's choice, moved by pain and awareness of her loneliness, is inevitable.
