A foreign view of Gabriela Mistral brings the Argentine actress, director and poet María Marta Guitart. Based on a selection of poems and prose by the Chilean poet, María Marta created the work Gabriela infinity (or the country of absence), which debuted last year in Buenos Aires and is now premiering in Chile as part of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Nobel Prize being awarded to Mistral.
In a bare space, with just a few crates of tomatoes, a lamp and a book, verses of Desolation, Tenderness, Tala and Winepress are said and sung along with selected prose. The text speaks of "pain transformed into beauty, that feeling of motherhood, poverty, injustice, bread, God, hope, the landscape, the memory of her childhood as that lost paradise, the love for her own mother. It is not Gabriela, but it is Lucila perhaps, it is one of those women that Gabriela knew how to see, we are all the women of the world, it is poetry with its mystery," explains María Marta.
María Marta Guitart has extensive experience in bringing poetry to the theater. In Federico had a dream he reviewed the work of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, in I haven't said he investigated the work of the Argentine writer Alfonsina Storni and in Divagaciones he created the dramaturgy together with Inés Saavedra, bringing poems and texts by the Argentine writer Silvina Ocampo to the theater.
