CEZARY GOES TO WAR

Piece where the autobiographical becomes a pretext: the acclaimed Polish director Cezary Tomaszewski reconstructs his time in military service — a system categorized according to the standards of masculinity — and turns it into a queer fantasy full of music, dance and theater, where Shostakovich's war symphonies are transformed into the musical basis for aerobic exercises or Nijinski's Prelude to the Nap of a Faun into an impulse to dance ballet in the dressing rooms.

The work, created as part of the Prewar/War/Postwar series of the Komuna//Warszawska, one of the most important independent theaters in Poland, reveals the absurdity of the nationalist discourses that prevail today in that country, and questions, in the process, virility as a social value.

After winning several awards and garnering good reviews, Tomaszewski brings this daring and disruptive proposal to Chile, in which four actors and a pianist put on stage an individual story that is also universal: despite the cultural changes that have occurred around women, a masculinity built on strength, violence, competitiveness, coldness and conflict is still expected of men.
