King Arthur, belonging to the musical genre called masquerade or semi-opera, corresponds to the baroque musical style. It was composed by the renowned English musician Henry Purcell and premiered in 1691 in London.
The plot is not similar to the legends of King Arthur in Camelot, although the famous wizard Merlin and supernatural characters such as Cupid and Venus do appear. The plot alludes to the battles of the Bretons against the Saxons and to Arthur's effort and desire to recover his beloved, Princess Emmeline, who has been kidnapped by his Saxon enemy, the pagan king Oswald of Kent.
