Tiziano Cruz's performance conference

Tiziano Cruz is an artist who, based on a selection of autobiographical marks, composes scenic narratives, invoking the memory of the body and the power of his Andean ancestors, in a desperate attempt to silence the mourning of his dead sister and the possibility of reconciling with the world.

In Three ways to sing to a mountain and find a childhood, Cruz gives an account of six years of research and writing about that pain, the losses, the social, economic and cultural injustice of some lost towns on the periphery of Argentina.

Born in Jujuy (Argentina), the performer carries out his work intervening in public space to "subvert oppressive hierarchies", as he calls them. In 2023 he was recognized with the Anti Live Art award in Finland, for his interdisciplinary work that politically combines visual and theatrical languages ​​with performance and urban intervention, to focus on the defolklorized cultures of the indigenous communities where he himself is from.

"My shows are biographical and I almost always work with indigenous, migrant or diaspora communities that reside in the places I go with my works. I get to know their lives, to tell them mine, I visit their territories, I seek to understand how they live and how we can help (...). I think, or at least I practice, leaving that great utopia of changing the world, stopping wasting that energy focused on something that is not going to happen, and focusing on changing the realities of the people who around us, a micropolitics. My works aim to change the realities of the communities I encounter," Cruz comments in an interview.

The performative conference, previously held at GAM within the framework of the Santiago a Mil Festival in 2023, attempts to find the possibility of reconciling with the world, exorcising centuries of abuse and proposing a scathing critique of those who perpetuate discrimination.

"Faced with works or artists that talk about racism or indigenism, viewers come with an idea of ​​what they are going to see based on their prejudices. A story of how we are or feel has been built for decades and, when they come to see our shows, they realize that it is something else. As a creator of the arts I take charge because it is our responsibility," Cruz emphasizes.

Along with this conference, the artist will carry out a residency located at GAM as part of Iberescena's collaborative creation laboratories. Tiziano will meet with indigenous communities in our country to jointly create a performance that will premiere in 2025.
