Rite of spring

Dance until death. The disease exists, it is called choreomania or dance epidemic and has recorded cases from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. They were groups on the move until the sacrifice. An idea that José Vidal somehow took up when he created his reinterpretation of The Rite of Spring, by Igor Stravinsky.

José Vidal's version brought that rite to the collective, with 47 bodies that guide a sensory experience. Smell, color, temperature, texture, movement and sound surround the spectators who enter the room barefoot. "Living an intense experience of a contemporary ritual is a vital space to feel part of a collective fabric. The invitation is to allow emotion, ecstasy, and emotional decanter to emerge, and for this reason the piece proposes sensory participation through an environment, as well as when people are invited to join the scenic ritual," say its creators.

In the work, the first minutes of Stravinsky's composition are treated through loops maintaining the evolutionary journey of the score. This original musical methodology of the piece was created by composer Jim Hast. From vocal work and the study of music, a language of movement is developed, also incorporating elements of urban dances such as hip-hop and house, and electronic music. In the 2017 remake for Holland Festival, it was necessary to revert the music, a work carried out by Andrés Abarzúa and Jim Hast based on the same compositional strategies.

The production premiered in 2014 at GAM, returns today after twelve years in necessary moments, according to its creators: "A society develops to a better or worse extent due to how everything is in relationship. In this sense, ritual in various cultures is a process that allows us to intensify being together and update what we are and do."

Another novelty of this version, in addition to the participation of dancers from the original and historical cast, is the incorporation of new performers and the participation from Germany, of Lena Strüetzke and Victor Bolzmann, invited thanks to the support of the Goethe Institut.

Since its premiere, the production has been seen and acclaimed by more than 10,000 people, and has been exhibited at different festivals of international relevance, such as the Santiago a Mil Festival, Holland Festival, Marseille Festival, Kampnagel Hamburg and Festival Cielos del Infinito, in Punta Arenas, Chile.
