Haptic, the missed meaning

The haptic sense is the ability to obtain information about objects through touch. This inspiration is what underlies Haptic, the missed sense, a work directed by Ana Carvajal that uses the Feldenkrais body self-awareness method to create a contemporary dance montage that moves through the subtle and small gestures.

This third part of the 'Little Pleasure Trilogy' (previously with Solaz and Pogo from 2017), will present performers deprived of sight, having to solve stage problems without using that sense, with the purpose of touch emerging as the protagonist.

Why the "strange meaning"? Because touch moves between euphoria and contagion. The performers must attend to an improvisation structure where the scenes move according to different instructions that allow them to solve problems inherent to the games and build a coherent sequence, without looking. Everything is linked to scenic elements such as felts and marks on the floor, sounds and times, thus seeking to offer an identification experience at a 'haptic' level with the audience.

"The work proposes a reflection of memory from the body of what happened, lived and felt. Touch is thus a strange sense, which has walked between euphoria and contagion, in the body memory of the public who has lived through historic years. Also, more specifically, it seems to me that this retracing is necessary for those of us who make up the discipline of dance, as it offers a novel movement, foreign to the usual canons, offering a different body movement, as it emerges from completely unusual logics," says the director. Ana Carvajal.

Described by El Mostrador as a "discovery of small pleasures", the work delivers delicacy and joy in the details, shifting the focus to the process of movement instead of the form. "Attendees will witness how five people manage to agree and take care of each other in a space where play and risk are present from the small and contingent, inviting them to think and observe differently," adds the director.

A work that shows how dance and movement emerge from difficulty, "touch with space and between people, intuition, and doubt, to create a unique and unusual movement," he concludes.
