IMUC Concerts June

In a new installment of the 61st UC Chamber Season at GAM, "Spanish Music for Guitar" will be presented on Wednesday, June 4. Professor José Antonio Escobar will focus on three essential Spanish composers.

First he will perform transcriptions of several works by Isaac Albéniz, who fused the virtuosity of Romanticism with traditional Hispanic harmonies, rhythms and melodies: Granada and Asturias, two of the most famous pieces that are part of his Suite Española; in addition to two works that exhibit Andalusian elements: Mallorca and Torre Bermeja. From Federico Moreno Torroba, the guitarist will address Aires de La Mancha, which is inspired by the Castilian folklore of La Mancha.

At the closing, it will pay tribute to Antonio José, who was shot in October 1936 in the Spanish Civil War. He was 33 years old and his music was banned and, after Franco, forgotten. You will hear his Guitar Sonata, which was only rediscovered in the 80s.

On Wednesday, June 25 we will receive a proposal from Sax'n Brass, which links the sounds of saxophones and brass. A saxophone quartet and a brass quintet address the national composers Marcos Contreras Hormazábal and Sergio Berchenko, the Venezuelan Juan López-Maya and the American Erik Ewazen.

Six professors from the UC Music Institute will perform: Hermes Quintanilla and Javier Contreras on trumpets, Eugenio Cáceres on horn, Héctor Montalván on trombone, Jeff Parker on tuba, and Alejandro Rivas, as well as Miguel Villafruela, former student David Sánchez and Karem Ruiz, the last four on saxophones.
