In the heights of the Chilean highlands there are no nurseries or kindergartens. In that immensity and emptiness, mothers who herd llamas, alpacas or sheep are forced to take their young children to shepherd, often carrying them on their backs. But the work is too hard, and since the children cannot always keep up with the heavy pace of leading the flock, some shepherds prefer to leave them resting in a visible place so that they can wait for them until the end of the day.
That's how Domingo Eloy, who was only 3 years old, got lost, and that's why his mother is in prison for "abandoning him." However, Pastora is not focused solely on this particular fact but rather on imbuing us with the vast and desolate highland environment, where poverty and helplessness mark the days. A beautiful and overwhelming documentary, superbly photographed and soundtracked, where the voices of its inhabitants seem to realize that the true tragedy is working in such extreme conditions, in a profession that is becoming hopelessly extinct.
