Seminar led by Professor Marianne Hirsch from Columbia University (USA), who will analyze the historical, memorial and aesthetic dimensions of school portraits.
Photographs of Native Americans and African American children in the United States that were used as an instrument for assimilation and photos of children in Nazi-occupied Europe that became a means of persecution and resistance. These are some of the examples that will be addressed at the conference to account for the historical, testimonial and ideological dimensions behind school portraits.
