Book launch "Largo petal del mar" by Isabel Allende

Coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the arrival of the Winnipeg to Chile, Largo petal de mar tells the story of Víctor and Roser, a Catalan couple who were part of the more than two thousand Spanish exiles who arrived in our country aboard the ship managed by Pablo Neruda in 1939.

This is the first time that Isabel Allende addresses the topic of the Spanish Civil War and Republican exile, topics for which it has been extensively documented.

The novel traces the history of half a century in Chile "that long petal of sea and snow, in the words of Neruda", from the 1940s to the 1990s, passing through Pinochet's coup d'état. Parading through it, as secondary characters, are President Salvador Allende and Pablo Neruda himself, whom it honors not only for his status as a poet (each chapter of the novel opens with a verse from his collection of poems) but for his political commitment.

And finally, it addresses the loves, passions and different exiles that the characters suffer throughout their lives, since as the author says, “if one lives long enough, all circles close.”

Isabel Allende will present Largo petal de mar next Monday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m. in GAM, together with the writer Elizabeth Subercaseaux.
