Laszlo and Koqoshka

In order to rescue the ancient practice of ursarios – bear whisperers from Eastern Europe of gypsy origin – musician Álvaro Pacheco and designer Carola Sandoval came together to create Laszlo y Koqoshka. The new work of theCompany Pacheco-Kaulen y Hnos, which premieres in this cultural center as part of the II Cycle of Contemporary Circus, organized by GAM and the circus arts area of ​​the CNCCA.

"We take this extinct trade to talk about the gypsy world, eliminate its stereotype and revalue a discriminated people. In our fiction, a tamer and his bear come from Transylvania to Latin America to preserve their tradition and demonstrate how an animal can be enchanted through tenderness, and that the power of music is above punishment," explains Pacheco. In 45 minutes, this circus theater work shows a world of traveling nomads creating their own traveling fair, with hand-to-hand techniques, charlatanism, trained animals and musical interventions. "People wonder if it's true or not, they enter the magic. Through humor, we deliver historical content about the tradition of charmers, Russian ballet, Balkan folk music. We educate in a fun way," he adds.

This project, the result of a 2013 research Fondart, seeks to delve deeper into what defines and how the circus family is constituted today. "Before the circus was a specific discipline, it was an art where mimes, puppeteers, actors, etc. converged. It is not about showing pure technique, it is a whole. The circus is not just a pirouette, it is giving it content to be able to create. We earn that space," he closes.
