The intelligent and kind young man named Kubo makes a living telling stories as wonderful as they are fantastic to the inhabitants of a coastal town. His calm and happy routine suddenly changes when, accidentally in one of his stories, he calls a mythical spirit that returns from the heavens determined to carry out an ancient revenge.
Kubo has no choice but to flee and join his friends, Monkey and Beetle, to save his family. Also, he must solve the mystery surrounding his disgraced father; the greatest of all samurai that has ever existed in history.
With the help of his prized shamisen, a magical instrument, Kubo confronts gods and monsters such as the vengeful Moon King and the evil twins to discover the secret of his heritage, reunite with his family, and fulfill the heroic destiny reserved for him in samurai lore.
