The experienced British documentary filmmaker Dick Fontaine captured hip-hop in its genesis in 1984, in this film for the BBC. His storytelling is novel and electrifying, and he recorded the pioneering work of people like Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Kool Herc, The Cold Crush Brothers, Jazzy Jay, Brim Fuentes, and The Dynamic Rockers. All subsequent films about the genre have stolen footage from here. Many times included in lists of the best music documentaries in history, it has been described as "an untouched time capsule of an exciting moment in the genre and in New York, with enough footage of a city covered in graffiti to make it an exciting discovery."
