Conference "Fado and Other Music"
The sound recording industry, since the beginning of the 20th century, recorded the local repertoire, a strategy that allowed the commercial implementation of international record companies in all parts of the world. Throughout the century we witnessed the crystallization of an idea of ​​“musical genres” with their specific musical, symbolic and poetic culture.

At the end of the century, in the 1980s, what is known as “local catalogs” began to be marketed as “world music,” which, today, is one of the most important markets in the music industries. The communication that will be presented seeks, from the point of view of fado, to trace the history of the genre and its relationship with “other music.”

Rodrigo Costa Félix has been a professional fadista for more than 25 years and one of the greatest references of his generation. He has released three albums - “Fados de Amor” received the Amália Rodrigues award in 2013 as the best Fado album and has been named best World Music album by Songlines magazine - this year he releases his new work “Tempo”. His vast experience and deep knowledge of the universe of Fado allow him to evaluate in a clear and informed way the impact and effects of new approaches and influences on this popular music, with urban roots, which has been part of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2011.

“Perpetual Movements” – Cinema-tribute to Carlos Paredes

Documentary divided into 17 “movements” that reveals, through testimonies and music, a tribute to the life and work of the musician Carlos Paredes.
Edgar Pera combines the collection of several testimonies with archive images and uses his own “narrative” of the guitarist – based on other interviews and the recording of a concert in 1984 in the city of Porto – to construct and visually expose the talent, simplicity and virtuosity that defined the entire personal and musical journey of Carlos Paredes.
With the work Movimentos Perpétuos, Edgar Pera received the awards for Best Feature Film, Best Cinematography for a Portuguese Feature Film and the Audience Award at the 2006 Lisbon Indie Festival.
