As part of the activities to celebrate Astronomy Day 2017, the documentary “Accelerated Expansion” will be shown, by director Ricardo García, about the Calán-Tololo project, a Chilean-American investigation that was the precursor to the discovery of the Accelerated Expansion of the Universe and whose discovery won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011.
The documentary, which will be presented at 7:30 p.m., lasts thirty minutes and features the participation of Chilean scientists José Maza, astronomer from the University of Chile; Mario Hamuy, astronomer and current President of the CONICYT Council; and astrophysicist Brian Schmidt, who was one of the three scientists awarded this important distinction.
After the screening of the audiovisual material, there will be a conversation panel in which astronomers Hamuy, Maza and Paulina Troncoso will participate, to talk about the future of astronomy in the country, the consequences of this discovery and how it became one of the most important findings for astronomical research, managing to change the conception of the cosmos.
For filmmaker Ricardo García, the importance of telling the story of the Calán-Tololo project is to show the great contribution that the Chilean team made to this paradigm shift in contemporary astronomy. "This research completely modifies our understanding of the universe in its entirety. In addition, I wanted to highlight and reinforce the idea of the relevance of science and technology education in our country. The Calán-Tololo project demonstrates that in our country, very important advances like these can be achieved," he stated.
