This is a CREART research and artistic creation project, sponsored by the Vice-Rector's Office for Research and Development of the University of Chile and carried out by academics Osvaldo Muñoz Peralta and Lorna Lares from the Department of Design together with professors Fernando Carrasco, Luis Núñez and Sergio Floody from the department of music and sonology of the University of Chile. Joining this team is the Industrial Design graduate from the University of Chile and a cult bombist, Pablo Vega Catrileo, who is the initial manager of the idea.
The central theme of this project is the Chilean urban bombo, also known as chinchín or chinchinero bombo. This project arises from the design, due to the need - in the field of artifact and craftsmanship - to establish a manufacturing precedent and document in a detailed manner and specify the techniques and methods of construction that this instrument has and has had; discover the factors that produce the uniqueness of its sound and rescue its significance in urban and popular memory, in order to establish its ideal or canonical sound and based on the exposed factors, carry out the construction of this instrument in a standardized or regular manner.
This rescue is carried out with the purpose of preserving this centuries-old tradition by making available to the community, through technical documents, samples and public exhibitions, the result of this work to make this particular and genuine instrument known.
