Editing Exercises diverts the sequences in the editing process of the film Winter, by Alberto Fuguet (for which Sebastián Arriagada is the editor) from their natural course, making them produce new and unexpected lines of meaning.
"Paper fills with signs like an ant bone," says the poet Enrique Lihn, quoted in the film, and the narrator would like to change the word "paper" for the word "image." The phrase defines the constructive model of the documentary: organizing the narrative so that the base material, what has already been done, the images of Fuguet's film, equivalent to the paper of Lihn's poem, are invaded by other images, fantasies, combinations and sounds, filling themselves with signs "like an ant bone." This strategy produces a fracture in the false harmony of reality, creating a space through which it becomes possible to enter areas not understood, and therefore excluded from cinematographic verisimilitude, at the same time that it avoids and questions the phobic gaze that seeks to see (and sees) always the same thing.
