During August, a dozen exhibitions will be presented in Barrio Arte spaces such as GAM, MAVI, MNBA, MAC, Ekho Gallery, Flach Gallery, Espacio O Contemporary Art Platform, Posada del Corregidor Art Gallery and the Bellas Artes Metro Station, to celebrate Photography Month.
In the Lastarria – Forestal perimeter you can see works by artists such as Paz Errázuriz, Arthur Conning, Jorge Brantmayer, Marcelo Montealegre, Zoltán Jókay, Smith, Anna Pistacchio, Florencia Serrano, Víctor Hugo Bravo, Allison Hantelhoff, Aranzazu Moena, Carmina Ramos and Francisco Lamperein, among others.
The community photo exchangePasando & Pasandowill collectively participate in those who visit Barrio Arte during August.
This month dedicated to photography in Barrio Arte has the support of Tuborg, a Danish Lager beer recognized for its strong commitment to urban culture in the world and which comes to Chile to continue contributing to the development of projects of this nature. Just as it has been doing since the last century and just as it did at the Barrio Arte Urban Festival, encouraging the creation of new murals, now it once again makes an open invitation especially to those who do not know the neighborhood to enjoy this entertaining public space and the art of photography.
The Santiago Metro will participate with the exhibition A tour of the history and heritage of Metro, mounted at the Bellas Artes station. In this exhibition, the public will be able to find images that show this fundamental means of transportation in the capital from its beginnings. In it you can see photographic records of the construction of the metro, the people linked to its implementation, first users, characteristic elements of each period such as the various types of tickets and other archives of its evolution until today.
Passing & passing: a photograph is not taken, it is made
The activity that can be found in various parts of Barrio Arte is called Pasando & Passing. This is a community and rotating photographic exchange, sponsored by Tuborg and thanks to the support of Epson, which will take place throughout August.
“As a symbol of the collaborative work that drives Barrio Arte, this initiative invites us to empathize with others, share memories and learn about stories translated into images,” says Cecilia Bravo, director of MAVI.
At Ekho Gallery, the space that produces this initiative, Pasando & Passingwill be from 1 to 17; in Plaza Mulato del MAVI, from the 18th to the 19th; and at the GAM, from the 23rd to the 26th. On the last Sunday of August there will be a grand closing at the GAM, with an award to the participants who have collaborated with their photographs, which will also be exhibited.
The subject of the photos to be exchanged is free and the system to participate is as follows:
- A printed photo is brought or printed at the same meeting point (Ekho, MAVI or GAM, depending on the date), making two postcard-sized copies of it.
- The first copy is hung where all the photos are displayed. When hanging it, another photograph can be removed, any of those that are displayed at that moment.
- The second copy is delivered to the person in charge to be identified with the name of its author. This photo remains in the hands of the organization so that at the end of August the authors of the photos that each person took are revealed.
Gabriela Mistral GAM Center
"Memory work through photography allows us to know and recognize each other within the shared territory. Crossing stories and understanding the value of heritage from a particular perspective allows us to feel part of it and take care of it. At GAM we have always highlighted photographic work in our main visual arts room, because we believe it deserves an important place," says Felipe Mella, director of GAM.
In addition to hosting the closing of Pasando & Passingthe Barrio Arte community photographic exchange, which will take place on August 26, the GAM participates in Photography Month with the exhibition In the river of time by Arthur Conning, an American artist living in Chile. The exhibition is on display until August 23 at BiblioGAM (building A, floor 3 of the GAM) and can be visited from Tuesday to Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., as well as Saturday and Sunday, between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Conning's work seeks to visually express the transience, uncertainty and ambiguity of our everyday world. With more than 50 years of experience, this artist explores the flow of time that is part of our lives, in a series of large format digital color photos processed computationally. The exhibition corresponds to photos from the first chapter of the book In the River of Time: A Photographic Retrospective 1965 – 2018, which was presented at the inauguration.
National Museum of Fine Arts MNBA
The retrospective Paz Errázuriz, organized by Fundación Mapfre and curated by Juan Vicente Aliaga, opens on July 26 at 7:30 p.m. and will be open until October 14 in the Matta room of the MNBA. This exhibition brings together around 170 photographs and some videos of the first photographer to obtain the 2017 National Prize for Plastic Arts.
His work is usually organized in thematic series and with them he has shown, over the years, the realities of various marginal subjects, who have been left outside the normality imposed by modern society. Having portrait as his favorite genre. Among his best-known series are: The fight against the angel (1987) dedicated to the world of boxing, Adam's apple (1990) whose theme is the living conditions of Chilean transvestites and transformers, The heart attack of the soul (1992-1994) composed of images of couples formed in the Putaendo psychiatric hospital and The nomads of mar(1991-1995) dedicated to the last living representatives of the Kawésqar ethnic group.
The exhibition includes educational material prepared by the Museum's Mediation and Education area and the printing of free booklets for distribution to the visiting public in addition to mediated visits for the general public during the exhibition months.
MAC Museum of Contemporary Art – Parque Forestal Headquarters
The exhibition At what distance do we see the difference? opens on Thursday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m., and runs until October 21 at the MAC Parque Forestal. In this exhibition, which was part of the Valparaíso International Photography Festival (FIFV) 2017, the photos of those who participated in the workshop of Paul Hutchinson, German photographer of contemporary urban life, such as hip hop culture or exoticism in public spaces, are exhibited; the works of Smith, a French photographer and audiovisualist who on this occasion recorded her impressions of Valparaíso on polaroids; and those of Zoltán Jókay, also a German who has dedicated himself to delving into human nature through portraiture. At what distance do we see the difference? comes to the MAC within the framework of the Migr'artes program, presented by the Goethe-Institut Chile and the French Institute of Chile.
Regarding the festival, the art critic Catalina Mena, before this Festival, remembers the words of the prominent Chilean biologist Humberto Maturana: We do not exist. We co-exist. We configure ourselves and co-emerge in relation to the other. In this reflection there is a question that haunts the exhibition: what is that fair distance that allows me to “see the other as a legitimate other”? And this political connotation – as it introduces the idea of legitimacy – is what Maturana uses to define love: “Seeing the other as a legitimate other in coexistence.”
Ekho Gallery
At Ekho Gallery they will inaugurate Photography Month on Wednesday, August 1 at 7:00 p.m. with the launch of the game Pasando & Pasando, which will run in the gallery until August 17 and in Barrio Arte, for the entire month.
On August 9, also at 7:00 p.m., the Jorge Brantmayer exhibition opens; On Saturday the 18th, at 11:30 a.m., the book The profound life of coal is launched with photographs by Miguel Sayago; On August 15 and 22, at 7:30 p.m., the videos Icons of 20th Century Chilean Photography will be screened; and finally, on Saturday, August 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Coffee with Photography Books will be held.
Flach Gallery
The exhibition The Unfinished Reform of Marcelo Montealegre will open on August 14, at 7:30 p.m., and will include a talk on August 23 at the same time at the Flach Gallery, specialized in Latin American and Chilean photography. In addition, they will offer activities every Saturday of the month through a Cycle of Photography and Sexual Dissidence, which includes talks at 6:00 p.m. on the 4th, 18th and 25th with Trans Tarot by Zaida González, Between your Word and Mine by Carolina Agüero and Pictophilia by Juan Carlos Luco, respectively. On Saturday the 11th, minute photographers will be installed at the front of the gallery, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a curtain and box cameras taking portraits on request.
Espacio O Contemporary Art Platform
From August 6 to 24, Espacio O will feature photography exercises that are installed within the problems of contemporary visual arts, such as the exhibitions My problems are not yours by Anna Pistacchio; Eternals, the superiority of the false by Florencia Serrano; and Cabeza de piece, the ribald dream of Víctor Hugo Bravo. In the three exhibitions, we not only reflect on the elements of photography, but also investigate the themes that the image generates. Topics such as the complex aspects of love (Pistacchio), the icons of mortality and eternity (Serrano) and the questioning of the beautiful and the violent (Bravo).
This contemporary art platform is located on the third floor of Calle Villavicencio 395 and is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In the store they will have photographs of Fiorella Angelini, Jorge Brantmayer, Rachel Harrison, Leo Vidal, Sebastián Rivas and Julio César Guardia, among others. In turn, they will have editions of photographic books by Andrés Figueroa, Mauricio Toro-Goya and more.
Posada del Corregidor Art Gallery
On Friday, August 24, the Collective Photography Exhibition opens, which is presented from the projects selected from the 2017 Call for Exhibitions at the gallery at 749 Esmeralda Street. The exhibition will be open to the public until September 22. Artists such as Allison Hantelhoff, Aranzazu Moena, Carmina Ramos and Francisco Lamperein participate. As a whole, the works show an expanded view of what we usually understand by “photographic image” from experimentation with analog and digital processes and formats, along with their crossovers and shifts towards painting and video art.
