The Gabriela Mistral Center (GAM), the Museum of Visual Arts (MAVI), the National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), together with art galleries and cultural spaces, form the Barrio Arte alliance in the heart of Santiago.
Barrio Arte Photography Month will offer contests, workshops, talks, book presentations and exhibitions dedicated to photography artists such as Marcela Bruna, Pablo Cortés, José Diniz, Paula López Droguett, Sady Mora, Macarena Peñaloza, Felipe Prado, Gabriela Rivera, Martha Rosler, Tatiana Sardá Yantén and Pablo Valenzuela.
And August 19, 1839 is a very important date for photography. That day, Louis Daguerre presented his latest creation to the French Academy of Sciences: the daguerreotype. The daguerreotype was the first announced photographic procedure, an invention that revolutionized the world of images, with scope unsuspected to this day. To commemorate this event, Photography Day is celebrated every August 19 around the world and our country is no exception. In Santiago, Barrio Arte will carry out various initiatives to celebrate in the Lastarria-Forestal perimeter.
Sede Forestal Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC)
The exhibition “If you lived here”, dedicated to Martha Rosler (1943), is the first retrospective in Latin America of the iconic American artist and is curated by Mariagrazia Muscatello and Montserrat Rojas Corradi. The exhibition, which opened on July 25 at 7:30 p.m. at MAC Parque Forestal, is made up of an emblematic selection of her work and the Martha Rosler Library project, carried out with local agents through book donations with a special focus on Chile and Latin America. The exhibition project includes a dialogue between the artist and national creators: Cristóbal Cea, Claudia del Fierro, Voluspa Jarpa, Bárbara Oettinger, Bernardo Oyarzún and Máximo Corvalán.
This artist is recognized as one of the pioneers in photography and the use of hybrid languages between video, writing, installation and performance. Her work speaks about the public sphere, focusing on everyday life, the media, war, gentrification and urbanization, among others, with a critical and feminist approach. “If you lived here” takes its title from the work “If you lived here” from 1989, where Rosler questions the processes of gentrification and social impoverishment in the United States during the Ronald Reagan government. The translation gives rise to other views and reflections in the Latin American context, with local narratives, referring specifically to current human displacements and the formation of post-dictatorship national identity.

Museum of Visual Arts (MAVI)
The GOST sensory and transpersonal observation group, guided by photographer Jesús Contreras, will develop the “Blind Photography Workshop”. This awareness-raising, creation and reflection workshop on the photographic image will be carried out using the Light Painting Methodology, for all people who wish to live an inclusive and creative experience. In this adventure, those who participate will be able to create photographs in a unique and entertaining way. This workshop invites you to understand photography as a tool for social inclusion.

Additionally, in the Plaza Mulato Gil de Castro, the anteroom of the MAVI, the Analogue Photography Meeting will take place, organized by the AFAN association. This open and free activity includes a fair for groups dedicated to analog photography and editorial projects; round tables on “Gender and Photography” and “Publication and Self-Publishing”; and workshops on analogue photographic techniques. National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA)
The National Museum of Fine Arts launched its second Photographic Call “Popular Flavors” for people who are fond of photography, of all ages. A selection of images sent by the public will form part of an exhibition at the museum, to be inaugurated on the occasion of World Photography Day. A selection will be made from the images received and will be exhibited in the Mediation and Education room of the MNBA.

In addition, the MNBA will offer the Conversation and launch of the catalog of the exhibition “Monumento edited” by the artist Andrés Durán. The exhibition, which was curated by Andrea Josch, is presented as a reflection on how commemorative monuments function today in the public spaces of Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. Currently, the majority have little visibility as a result of how the contemporary city has been structured. “Edited Monument” works with the use of photographic and audiovisual material of the monuments to intervene in them and generate fictions in a realistic way, in this way the fiction is presented inside the Museum and the real one in the public space.

Museum of American Popular Art (MAPA)
The Museum of American Popular Art invites the public to participate throughout August in “I share my clothing, my story,” sharing photographs on Instagram that are related to the theme of the current MAPA exhibition: “Latin American Costume and Clothing.”
The images can be of typical or modern clothing, amulets, hats, beads, people creating clothing or simply the piece that they liked the most in the exhibition. They will be uploaded daily to the @mapamuseo account and those that get the most reactions each week will receive a set of MAPA books. Use the hashtag #indumentariaMAPA. Alameda 227, floor -1.
On the first day of August, at 7:00 p.m., the Ekho Gallery began Photography Month with the inauguration of the exhibition “Exposed Landscape, Bordering Dimensions” by Sady Mora. Additionally, on the 6th at 7:00 p.m., they will screen a series of six documentaries dedicated to the Chilean photographers Catalina de la Cruz, Verónica Soto, Julia Toro, Cholita Chic, Kena Lorenzini and Gabriela Rivera. This project is part of the web series Rectangle in the Eye. Finally, on the 8th at 7:00 p.m., the exhibition “Geometry of the instant: Rapa Nui” by photographer Pablo Valenzuela will open. 349 Merced Street local 12.
