A hundred participants, from different artistic and cultural associations, unions and neighbors, gathered around this citizen forum for reflection promoted at GAM last Wednesday, October 30.
In a work format of self-convened groups, with an average of six people each, participation tables were set up around three thematic axes: What is a priority today to reduce inequality in Chile? What are the main rights that should be enshrined in the Constitution? And what changes does the culture in Chile need?
The first axis, related to how to reduce inequality in the country, had twelve groups that raised the need to reduce wage gaps and advance more decent salaries. Also in an adjustment in the burden of taxes, greater access to education and greater territorial equity, among other initiatives.
The second axis generated thirteen proposals, most of them related to the Constitution ensuring the right to life, health, education, housing and welfare, in addition to enshrining the protection of the environment, the recognition of indigenous peoples, freedom of expression and dignity.
Finally, when asked about changes in Culture, the majority concluded that the State must ensure greater access and provide more resources; promote quality public television, decentralize art and integrate it into education at all levels. Reducing the book tax was also mentioned.
"With these concerns, a manifesto will be made that, in turn, we intend to deliver to the Ministry of Cultures," commented Felipe Mella, executive director of GAM. "The questions point to how culture can help solve conflicts, to discuss the constituent assembly and also about inequality," he said.
The #CabildoGAM joined other instances of this type that took place in different parts of the capital. In Matucana 100, for example, 17 working groups met around topics such as artistic and civic education, promotion of reading, financing budget and competitive funds, gender and social inclusion, citizen participation and access to culture, among others.
