Workshop "The representation of Women in the West"

Emphasis is placed on the feminine problem because its staging and consequent visibility paved the way for the consideration of gender identities.

Syllabus

1.-  The dissolution of genres:
a) The dissolution of literary genres.
b) The dissolution of genres in art. 
c) The unisex concept. Unisex fashion. Feminist criticism.

2.- Anthropogenesis: man and woman, the feminine and the masculine. Adam and Eve, a) The androgynous and hermaphrodite. The myth of androgynous beings and the myth of Hermaphroditus. 
b) The conception of love as divine possession or alienation.

3.- Feminism. Feminism as a gender study. 
a) Regulations on women according to the context: From the legal to the aesthetic. From the Roman legal code to the code of courtly love, from Western religious codes to unisex.

4.- Misogyny:
a) Women as the origin of all evils: Lilith, Eve and Pandora.
b) Gynophobia, fear of women: from Pandora to Hillary Clinton.
c) Seduction and power: from Pandora, Cleopatra or Delilah to Monica Lewinsky or Stormy Daniels. From Dido to Golda Meir, Angela Merkel, Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher.

5.- The faces of women:
a) Women as mothers: from Helena, Thetis, Penelope, Medea, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Elizabeth the Catholic to Diana of Wales, Elizabeth II of England or Angelina Jolie. (The battlefield is still the children)
b) The unfaithful woman: Aphrodite as goddess of love, from Clytemnestra, Madan Bobary, Anna Karenina to Marilyn Monroe.   
c) The female prophet: From Cassandra or the Sibyls to Marie Curie or Rachel Carson
d) Magicians and sorceresses: From Circe, Calypso, Medea.
e) Heroines and reconcilers: Camilla, Esther, Judith, Mary, Beatrice, Joan of Arc, Jane Addams, Indira Ghandi, Teresa of Calcutta, Malala.

6.- Feminine conflicts:
a) Competition: mother-daughter, sister-sister, friend-friend, mother-in-law-daughter-in-law. From Clytemnestra and Electra or Electra and Ismene to Diana of Wales and Camila Parker Bolles, Sofia of Greece and Letizia.
b) Seduced woman, abandoned woman: Ariadne, Medea.
