Parlor

An older man speaks to Elisa, his wife, inside a parlour. There the two claim to be the one who is visiting the other. Who tells the truth? Who is free and who is locked up? Or are they both secluded without realizing it? But despite the doubts and the glass that separates them, they manage to find each other. It is not so important to clarify what is real and what is not when they remember the salads they cooked, the snoring in front of the television and the nights interrupted by making love. Promises are reborn. They forget details. Age, confusion and distance have not completely erased the tenderness, violence and eroticism of their relationship.

This is Locutorio, a work by Jorge Díaz that premiered in 2017 under the direction of Cristián Plana as a GAM Production to commemorate the 10 years since the playwright's death.

"It is a disconcerting work, minimal, but full of reflections that make it disturbing and dangerous. I have worked before with short texts and they interest me because they can be freely explored and expanded, filling them with details that are related to the scenic. Jorge Díaz was aware that his work was an open material that required to be completed, but not closed, by another," says the director.

Plana's staging places the fragility of the bodies of this older couple inside glass cubes, a material that, although it allows them to see each other, makes it impossible for them to touch each other; it reflects them, gives them back their own image or melts them, bringing their confusion to the visible. The times are also confused. The characters' memories move in jumps between past moments that mix with their present. "It is the time of the mind, when old age is tinged with a certain madness and times become confused," explains Plana and adds: "The idea has been to enhance ambiguity. Not to close or answer the great question of the work of knowing who is confined, who is the visitor and who is the visited."
